Best AI tools to make games
A practical comparison, with real games built with each tool.
There's no single best AI tool for making games — it depends on how big your game is and whether you want to touch code. Here's how the tools behind the games on this list compare. Each name links to the games made with it, so you can judge the results yourself.
For complete beginners
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini: ask for a game "in a single HTML file" and you'll have something playable in a minute. Great for arcade games, puzzles and prototypes. They get harder to use once the game grows past one file.
For publishing without code
Lovable, Bolt and Replit build the game and host it for you, so you get a shareable link right away. Best for simple 2D web games and quick experiments.
For bigger and 3D games
Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and Windsurf are agents that work across a whole project: many files, assets, a game engine, even a multiplayer server. Most of the ambitious games here — 3D open worlds, racing games with real tracks, multiplayer shooters — were built with these, usually on top of Three.js.
Game-specific platforms
Rosebud AI is built only for games: you describe it, it builds it, and the community can play and remix. Great for learning and fast iteration.
Our take
- First game ever → a chat AI, single HTML file.
- Want a link today without code → Lovable, Bolt or Replit.
- Serious project, 3D or multiplayer → Claude Code, Cursor or Codex.
Whatever you pick, keep the first version tiny — and when it's done, submit it here.
