What are vibe coded games?
The meaning of vibe coding, the games that made it famous and where to play them.
A vibe coded game is a game whose code was written mostly by an AI. Instead of programming line by line, the creator describes what they want — "a 3D racing game on a neon city track, with drifting and a lap timer" — and an AI tool such as Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT writes the code. The creator plays it, says what feels wrong, and the AI changes it. Repeat until the game is fun.
Where does the name come from?
The term vibe coding was coined by AI researcher Andrej Karpathy in February 2025, describing a way of programming where you "fully give in to the vibes" and let the AI handle the code. Games quickly became the most visible use of the idea: they're easy to share, fun to show off, and you can tell in seconds whether they work.
The games that made it famous
In early 2025 indie maker Pieter Levels (@levelsio) built a multiplayer flight simulator in the browser with Cursor and AI models, shared it on X and turned it into a business within weeks. That sparked the Vibe Coding Game Jam, where entries must be mostly written by AI. The 2025 edition received over 1,000 games and the 2026 edition over 900 — many of them listed here.
Are vibe coded games any good?
Quality varies a lot. Some are five-minute experiments; others are polished multiplayer games with thousands of players.
